There has been a lot of talk about the death of rock music. Maybe you\u2019ve heard it too and begun to wonder if it\u2019s time to hang up your Fender<\/a> for good. <\/span><\/p>\n

After all, when is the last time a rock band topped the Billboard charts<\/a>?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Maybe it\u2019s something to be concerned about. But personally, I haven\u2019t checked the Billboard charts since I installed Spotify<\/a> back in 2006\u2026 have you?<\/span><\/p>\n

Let\u2019s talk about the future of rock music.<\/span><\/p>\n

What\u2019s happened? Are traditional bands really passe? Should you sell your guitar and buy an MPD instead?<\/span><\/p>\n

What Happened to Rock Music?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Back in 2018, Vice declared that \u201c<\/span>Rock Is Dead, Thank God<\/span><\/a>.\u201d And while that could be enough reason for most of us to stop reading Vice altogether, they might be on to something.<\/span><\/p>\n

According to some sources, the last rock song to top the global charts was <\/span>Viva La Vida by Coldplay<\/span><\/a> — and that was twelve years ago.<\/span><\/p>\n

Then again, it depends on how you define rock.<\/span><\/p>\n

Bands like Imagine Dragons have <\/span>experienced great success<\/span><\/a> with their fusion of electronic music and power-ballads.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Still, that\u2019s not enough for rock\u2019n\u2019roll die-hards — so let\u2019s dig a bit deeper.<\/span><\/p>\n

Is Rock Too Much Hassle to Make?<\/span><\/h2>\n

Rock music requires a lot of time, money, and effort to make. You have to invest in instruments, learn how to play them, find other likeminded musicians, and rehearse your backend off.<\/span><\/p>\n

Once you\u2019re ready to tour, you can expect to multiply your expenses<\/a> by however many band members and instruments you plan on bringing — it ain\u2019t cheap.<\/span><\/p>\n

Compare that to hip-hop, which, <\/span>in recent years<\/span><\/a>, only requires a bottle of codeine and autotune.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

In other words, it\u2019s harder to be a rockband than an electronic music artist. I say this as someone who\u2019s dipped my toes in both genres over the past decade.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

What Does the Future of Rock Music Look Like?<\/span><\/h2>\n

All that said, I don\u2019t think there\u2019s anything to worry about. Sure, maybe the kids don\u2019t listen to as much electric guitar as they used to. Maybe they like a synth and some 808\u2019s in the mix.<\/span><\/p>\n

But are they your only market as a band?<\/span><\/p>\n

The world looks very different than it did five, ten, and definitely twenty years ago. Social media and streaming services mean that you don\u2019t have to compete for the same listeners as everyone else. Niche music has seen a steady rise <\/span>since MySpace was a thing<\/span><\/a>.<\/span><\/p>\n

The entire world, from the US to Japan, is <\/span>your potential fanbase<\/span><\/a> — so go get \u2018em.<\/span><\/p>\n

Add to that the fact that it\u2019s never been cheaper to produce and market music. Think hip-hop and EDM artists are the only acts that can record in their bedrooms?<\/span><\/p>\n
